DESCRIPTION:
On August 15, 1947 the UK Parliament officially declared India and Pakistan independent nations no longer under its colonial rule. Both nations fought hard to gain independence with the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Local time of this event was August 14. Pakistan observes its Independence Day on the 14th, India the 15th.
Britain partitioned the territory into two nations: a Hindu (India) and Muslim (Pakistan) majority areas.
